| HOUGH COMES THROUGH AGAIN IN EXTRAS LEADING RASCALS WIN
O’Fallon -- There he was again, at the plate with the chance to give River City its second straight walk-off hit. Brad Hough stood in with two outs and Greg Stone at second and this time delivered a single in the tenth to give the Rascals a 5-4 win over the Rockford RiverHawks. Wednesday night Hough hit a walk-off bomb in the eleventh leading the Rascals to a 2-1 victory over Rockford. Rockford took the lead early when a single up the middle by Jason James scored two runners making it 2-0 RiverHawks. River City fired back when Chris Raniere hit his first professional homerun, a two-run shot, tying the game at two in the fifth inning. An inning later the Rascals used four hits to take the lead off RiverHawk starter Jim Paduch. Jeff Miller and Andrew Sweet collected the RBIs, giving the Rascals a 4-2 lead. River City’s bullpen set the team up with the chance to ice the game away late after starter Danny Powers went five innings and allowed two earned runs. But Brian Logan fell into trouble in the eight. With one away, Corey Stang doubled down the left field line, bringing the tying run to the plate. Logan got the next batter Chris Raber to strike out swinging for the second out. In came right-hander Armando Carrasco to face the right handed Steve Pickerell. Pickerell hit a line drive to left to put the runners at the corners. Matt Mazurek then followed it up with an RBI single to make it 4-3, Pickerell took third on the play. Carrasco was brought out an in came closer Mike Benacka to face Brett Thomas. Thomas stood in 0-3, but entered hitting .385 against River City pitching in the first four games. Benacka had the batter 1-2 but elected to use a third-to-first pickoff move which resulted in Mazurek getting caught off the bag. In the run down that ensued, Miller overthrew Stone at short and the tying run scored to make it 4-4. Benacka went on the fan Thomas on the next pitch. The game stayed tied until the bottom of the tenth despite the RiverHawks stranding four base runners combined in the ninth and tenth innings, allowing Hough to be the hero once again. With Stone at second base and two away, Hough shot a ground ball off the newly entered Matt Borman at third which shot into left field for the game winner. “This is something I’m not used to,” Stone said, “In Florence they don’t battle like this. There’s a bunch of warriors out there and I love it.” For Benacka, it was his first blown save of the season as he instead picked up the win (1-0) going 2.1 innings of relief with five strikeouts. Matt Enderle took the loss going 1.2 innings, allowing two hits and one earned run. River City (5-3) will go for the sweep against Rockford (4-3) Thursday night at T.R. Hughes Ballpark .
