HOUGH COMES THROUGH AGAIN, RASCALS WIN IN 14

O’Fallon, MO – After the longest game of the season, Brad Hough came through in the clutch once again with his fourth game winning hit of the season to give River City the win over the Washington Wild Things 6-5 in 14 innings.

Both teams wasted no time getting their bats going.

Washington scored a run in the first when a line drive popped off Bobby Mosby’s glove scoring Chris Sidick. Sidick reached on a single off of the in right field wall.

The Rascals responded immediately when leadoff batter Jacob DeBoer hit a line drive up the middle. Greg Stone advanced DeBoer to third when he hit the ball through the infield to right. DeBoer was finally driven in when Randy Rosa put up his third RBI of the season to tie the game 1-1.

The Rascals added a run in each of the following two innings.

The run in the second came after Jeff Miller reached on a walk with two outs. He scored when DeBoer hit a line drive to center field.

In the third, Hough hit a leadoff double down the left field line to start the inning and was hit in by Bobby Mosby, giving River City the lead 3-1.

The next two innings went scoreless.

River City started the sixth off right with a strikeout, but got into a jam after a fly ball to center was dropped by DeBoer resulting in Matt Sutton reaching all the way to third. Sutton scored on a Pat O’Brien single to right making it 3-2 Rascals.

It was more trouble in the seventh as a base hit up the middle and a sacrifice bunt put a runner in scoring position for the Wild Things. With two outs, Robbie Knapp drove in his second RBI with a single to right, tying the game at three.

With the game still tied after nine innings, the Rascals went to extras for the fourth time this season.

Nathan Messner reached second base after an error by Hough and an overthrow to first in the twelfth. Sutton came up next and hit a double to right field scoring Messner and giving the Wild Things the lead 4-3.

But the Rascals refused to give up. With one out, Miller stepped up to the plate and hit a long shot over the right field wall for a solo homerun to tie the game 4-4.

After a brief rain delay, Robbie Knapp was looking to end it when he hit a homerun to deep left field in the fourteenth to give Washington the lead once again, 5-4.

But just like he did in the twelfth, Miller stepped up big and led off with a double to left. After the seventh pitcher entered the game for the Wild Things, DeBoer reached base on his second hit-by-pitch.

One out later, Hough came to the plate hitting 1-6 on the night. With one ball against him, Hough hit a line drive to left field scoring both runners and winning the game for the Rascals 6-5.

The hit was Hough’s third walk-off, and fourth game-winner of the season.

“Tonight’s hit has to be the best feeling,” Hough said. “I was having a hard night and it was good to come through out there. I don’t know how to describe it, it’s just the best.”

Chris Clem started for the Rascals and went six innings, allowing two runs and one earned in the no decision. Chris Rivera did not last through the fifth to pick up the no decision for Washington. Scott Fogelson (1-1) ended up as the winning pitcher after tossing five innings in relief.

The Rascals (10-6) are still tied for first place in the Frontier League West after the Evansville win tonight. The Wild Things dropped to 6-9. The two teams are back at it Saturday night starting at 7:05 p.m.
