RASCALS STRAND NINE, LOSE 5-2 TO TRAVERSE CITY IN SERIES OPENER

O’Fallon, MO – Andrew Sweet blasted his second home run of the season against the Traverse City Beach Bums but it was not enough to pick-up the win as the Rascals lost 5-2 in game one of three at T.R. Hughes Ballpark.

Starting pitcher Jonathon Miller (2-5) allowed five hits including three runs that scored off two home runs in the loss.

Sweet put the Rascals on the board in the second inning when he hit his two-run homer to right center field scoring Jeff Miller who reached on a walk.

An inning later Traverse City put up a two-run shot of their own, tying the game 2-2.

Traverse City added three more runs in the ballgame including Jake Whitesides’ seventh home run of the season.

The Rascals and the Beach Bums each had eight hits on the night, but the Rascals stranded nine runners and ran into two costly outs on the basepaths.

Luke Barganier extended his hitting streak to 19 games with an infield single in the bottom of the seventh inning. A.J. Van Slyke went 3-4 with three singles leading the Rascals offense.

John Haldis (1-0) picked up his first win for Traverse City lasting 5.0 innings allowing the only two runs of the game. Jeff Williams collected his seventh save for the Beach Bums closing the game with two strike outs.

River City (22-24) and Traverse City (27-19) continue their series Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday nights are Military Appreciation night, and members of the VFW and American Legion will be honored specifically at T.R.
