MINERS COME BACK TO TAKE SERIES

O’Fallon, MO – The River City Rascals left with the feeling they had one taken from them Saturday night as the Southern Illinois Miners came back with seven unanswered runs to win 9-7.

Tony Roth’s third home run of the series proved to be the game winning hit in the eight inning, with two aboard Roth sent one sailing to left field to put the Miners ahead for the first time 8-7.

“We felt like we should have won the last two of this series tonight,” Rascals catcher Andrew Sweet said. “Gateway’s playing a lot better so we have to put this series behind us and play well on the road.”

The Rascals travel to Sauget, Illinois for a three game series Sunday through Tuesday. The Miners picked up two of three from the Rascals in this series.

Danny Powers started for the Rascals and allowed five earned and seven hits in six innings with nine strikeouts for a no decision. Chris Clem (2-4) suffered the loss for the in his first bullpen appearance of the season. Clem entered with two on and none out in the seventh and gave up a two run single to Eric Suttle which brought the Miners to within two runs 7-5.

River City had built the lead thanks to Sweet’s RBIs in the first, third and fifth innings. A.J. Van Slyke went yard for the third straight night, going back-to-back in the sixth with Ryan Wehrle. Both Wehrle and Van Slyke have three home runs in their first six Rascals games.

But the eighth proved to be the difference, with two on and one out, Roth connected to give the Miners the lead. Tim Dorn connected on his first hit of the series in the ninth off Clem, providing a solo home run and some insurance for the Miners going to the bottom half of the frame.

The run proved more than what relief pitcher Kevin Dooley needed. Dooley (1-0), making his professional debut out of Creighton University, went three innings without allowing a run with four strikeouts for the win.

Van Slyke finished 4-5 for the Rascals with two RBI and two runs scored. Wehrle went 3-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.
