| RANIERE CARRIES RASCALS OVER GRIZZLIES
Sauget, IL – Chris Raniere had a career day, the River City Rascals third baseman went 4-5 with two home runs and four RBI to give the Rascals a series opening win over the Gateway Grizzlies 10-5 Sunday afternoon. For the Rascals, it was their fourth straight win to start the season over the Grizzlies. River City swept Gateway in their first home series back in May. Adam Tollefson (3-0) got the start for the Rascals and gave up three quick runs in the first two innings, but lasted long enough for his bats to give him the lead and eventually the win in his first start after 12 relief appearances. Tollefson went 6.1 innings with four strikeouts and six walks. Charlie Lisk plated the first two runs for the Grizzlies in the first with a double to left. A Jeff Miller error at first in the second allowed the third run to score. Before the error in the bottom half of the frame, Miller went yard with his fifth home run of the season to lead off. With two outs and Phil Laurent at first, Raniere hit the first of his two home runs. After two it was 3-3 and stayed that way until the fifth when River City scored three. The first three to the plate reached in the inning off Erik Dessau. Ryan Wehrle reached on an error, A.J. Van Slyke walked and Miller doubled home a run. Van Slyke scored on Andrew Sweet’s groundball to second and Miller came home on a Laurent single to make it 6-3 Rascals. Raniere hit his second home run in the seventh off left-handed relief pitcher Coby Mavroulis to make it 8-3. The Grizzlies mounted a rally and cut it to 8-5 after eight. Gateway though, stranded two in the seventh and three in the eighth as closer Mike Benacka was stretched to 1.2 innings for the save. For Benacka it was his eighth of the season. Bobby Mosby hit his fourth home run of the season in the top of the ninth off Eric Ridener to make it 10-5. Dessau dropped to 2-3 on the season and is now 0-2 in two starts against the Rascals. River City (18-13) and Gateway (14-17) will play game two of the series Monday at 7:05 p.m. from GCS Ballpark.
