EARLY OFFENSE CARRIES THUNDERBOLTS TO VICTORY

O’Fallon, MO – The Windy City ThunderBolts led throughout and took the series two games to three from the River City Rascals in a 10-3 win, dropping them into a tie for first place with the ThunderBolts.

The Rascals came in with a season best .257 average as a team, but only produced six hits and three runs Friday night.

“We’ve been hitting the ball well, but our pitching and fielding has been struggling lately,” said Rascals’ designated hitter Phil Laurent. “We are looking for a way to click everything at once, we have to battle.”

In his return to the starting rotation, Mike Castrignano (1-3) lasted only two innings allowing five hits and five runs.

Windy City scored at least a run in each of the first five innings.

They managed to bring in three in the second inning after a balk from Castrignano and a two-run single.

Windy City added three more in the fourth inning off Adam Tollefson after a single and a ground rule double put two men on for the ThunderBolts. Gilberto Mejia hit a ground ball back to the pitcher, and came all the way around to score as the throw to first rolled and rolled and rolled all the way down the right field wall.

The Rascals finally put a run on the board in the bottom of the inning when A.J. Van Slyke hit a solo home run into right center field making it 7-1 ThunderBolts.

River City was able to put up two more runs in the bottom of the eighth when Ryan Wehrle hit a two-run double, but their offensive efforts fell short as they would not score again.

Ross Stout (3-3) picked up the win for Windy City pitching 7.2 innings and allowing six hits and three runs against the Rascals. Castrignano took the loss for River City.

The River City Rascals (19-17) will begin their second series against the Evansville Otters Saturday night at T.R. Hughes Ballpark. The game starts at 7:05 p.m. and immediately afterwards, the Sinister Blue Band will be performing in Rascal Island. Gates open at 6:05 p.m. and tickets can be ordered by calling (636) 240-BATS or www.rivercityrascals.com.
