TRAVERSE CITY, MI – The River City Rascals are pleased to announce that former Rascals right-handed pitcher Josh Kinney has become the first player in the history of the franchise to reach the major leagues after beginning his journey in O’Fallon, Missouri. The St. Louis Cardinals purchased the contract of Kinney last night from Triple-A, Memphis and will now don a Cardinals uniform for Tony La Russa’s ballclub.
Kinney played with the Rascals in 2001 where he made an immediate impression winning his first professional start against the Dubois County Dragons hurling eight innings and striking out six. He would make two more starts with River City before being signed by the Cardinals organization on June 15th, 2001. Kinney struck out 18 batters in 21 innings and finished with a 1.71 ERA while in a Rascals uniform.
The Port Allegany, PA resident made many stops along the way to St. Louis after leaving River City. He reached the Double-A level in 2003 where he baffled Southern League opposition while pitching for Tennessee. Kinney went 2-1 in 29 appearances with an astounding 0.68 ERA. He would reach Triple-A with the Memphis Redbirds in 2005 after posting impressive numbers with the Springfield Cardinals. Kinney had a career-high 11 saves in 2005 before getting promoted and made 26 appearances with Memphis which is where he began the 2006 season.
Before joining the Cardinals, Kinney led the Redbirds bullpen in ERA (1.62), strikeouts (51), and was named Memphis’ lone all-star selection in the Triple-A All-Star Game. He becomes the 13th player in Frontier League history to advance to a major league team.
