Jonny Ortiz named pitcher of the week

Gateway Grizzlies Trae Santos and River City Rascals Jonny Ortiz were named Frontier League Players and Pitcher of the Week, respectively as chosen by Pointstreak, the official statistical provider of the Frontier League and the Independent Professional Baseball Federation.

Trae Santos earned his honor this week by posting a .500 batting average while hitting four homeruns and driving in nine. Santos hit safely in five of six games helping the Grizzlies to a 3-3 record over that stretch. Gateway currently sits 4.5 games back of the West Division lead early in the season.

Prior to joining the Grizzlies, Santos spent the 2016 season as a member of the San Diego Padres organization where he split time between High A Lake Elsinore and Double-A San Antonio. The Barrigada, Guam native and Troy University alum was drafted in the 17th round by San Diego in 2013. Santos posts a .230 career batting average in 1,408 plate appearances while also hitting 32 home runs and driving in 155. This season with the Gateway Grizzlies Santos is posting a .276 batting average with five home runs and 15 runs batted in.

Jonny Ortiz earned his honor following a week where he appeared in four games out of the bullpen for the Rascals. Ortiz appeared in 3.1 innings this past week facing ten batters and striking out four. Along with picking up the win out of the bullpen on June 1st against Florence, Ortiz only gave up one hit and he did not allow a run in the four games that he appeared in which all were wins for the River City Rascals.

Joining the River City Rascals in 2017, Ortiz has posted a 3-1 record out of the bullpen appearing in 25 games and 23.1 innings. The Coral Springs, Florida native has struck out 25 batters, walking five and allowing 22 hits over his Frontier League career while only allowing opponents to hit .125 against him.
