The River City Rascals will see a changing of the guard behind the plate in 2019. The backstop position has been manned by veterans Josh Ludy and Mike Jurgella for the last few seasons, but a new crop of players will compete for the starting job this spring. Last year's primary back-ups Gage West and James Morisano will be in the mix to take on the starting role.
West hit .239 with nine RBIs in 29 games as a rookie in 2018, highlighted by a four-hit, three RBI performance against the Evansville Otters on July 29. The Tallahassee, FL native joined the team in June after graduating from Faulker University in Montgomery, AL. The 23-year old hit .326 with six home runs and 52 RBIs as a senior, helping lead the Eagles to the NAIA World Series. West started his collegiate career at Florida State.
Morisano, a Staten Island, NY native, hit .292 in nine games as a rookie last season. He hit his first career home run on August 29 against the Southern Illinois Miners, and had a three-hit game against the team earlier in the season. Prior to signing with the Rascals, he enjoyed a stellar collegiate career at Saint Louis University, helping lead the Billikens to the NCAA tournament as a senior in 2018. He was a college teammate of Rascals player/coach Braxton Martinez for two seasons at SLU.
The Rascals kick-off the 2019 campaign against the Washington Wild Things on Thursday, May 9 at CarShield Field. Tickets for the season are available at rivercityrascals.com, or by calling the team box office at 636-240-2287.
