Rascals Split Doubleheader With Boomers

O'FALLON, Mo. -- Nearly 30 hours after the first pitch of the first game, the River City Rascals and Shaumburg Boomers finally completed their doubleheader at CarShield Field. The Rascals took the first game of the twin-bill, which started on Wednesday night, by a score of 10-3 before dropping the nightcap 4-2 on Thursday in extra innings.

In the opener, the Boomers got on the board first with an RBI single from Nick Oddo in the top of the first. The Rascals then responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame, getting RBI doubles from Braxton Martinez and Andrew Penner, an RBI single from Nolan Meadows, and a sacrifice fly from Zach Lavy. Play was then suspended with one out in the top of the second inning due to severe thunderstorms in the area.

When the game resumed on Thursday, neither team scored again until the top of the fourth, when Connor Oliver hit an RBI triple for the Boomers to make it 4-2. The Rascals got the run back in the bottom on the frame, with Trevor Achenbach scoring on a throwing error from pitcher Payton Lobdell to first base. The Rascals broke the game open with a five-run sixth, highlighted by a three-run blast from Lavy. They held on for the win despite Schaumburg scoring a run in the top of the seventh.

LJ Kalawaia had three hits in the game, his Rascals debut. Both Martinez and Penner drove in a pair of runs in the victory.

Rascals starter Alex Winkelman allowed one run in 1 1/3 innings of work with two strikeouts, but his outing was cut short due to the suspension. Taylor Ahearn (2-1) earned the win, finishing out the game with 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs with three strikeouts in the effort.

Boomers starter Connor Reed (2-5) took the loss, allowing the four first inning runs. He did not return when the game continued on Thursday.

In Game 2, the game was scoreless entering the fourth inning before Matt Rose put the Boomers in front with a solo shot to lead-off the frame. The Rascals immediately responded with homers from Penner and James Morisano in the bottom of the fourth. The Boomers tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth, as Quincy Nieporte drove in Chase Dawson on a groundout after Dawson led-off the inning with a triple.

The game would go into extra innings, and after neither team scored in the eighth, Nieporte started the ninth with a two-run blast to left. The Boomers had started the inning with a man at second base, per the International Tie-Breaker Rule. The Rascals got two on in the bottom of the ninth, but Boomers closer Connor Eller was able to strand both runners and seal his 12th save of the season.

Rascals starter Austin Dubsky allowed two runs over 4 1/3 innings with five strikeouts in his team debut, taking a no-decision. Reliever Yeison Medina (2-3) took the loss, allowing Nieporte's homer.

Boomers starter Aaron Rozek allowed two runs over five innings with four strikeouts. Dylan Stutsman (4-1) earned the win with two scoreless innings out of the Schaumburg bullpen.

The Rascals (29-26) host the Southern Illinois Miners for a three-game weekend set beginning tomorrow night at 6:35 p.m. CDT from CarShield Field. Tanner Cable is expected to take the mound in the series opener.
